Girlfriends Mission Day
The Women’s Ministry’s recent “Girlfriends” mission day saw women of all ages circle our city serving the Lord and making new friends. From Hoover to Alabaster to North Birmingham to Wylam to Centerpoint, more than 100 Hunter Street women participated in this first “Girlfriends” event.
What happened? Women visited homebound members, worked on two Habitat for Humanity homes, led block parties for children, shared Bible stories, played games, did crafts, ran relay races, ate pizza and ice cream and shared the love of Christ. Ladies, if you missed this opportunity to serve, another “Girlfriends” mission day will be held.
Girl’s Night Out
This is one of the biggest outreach events of our Women’s Ministry. It is an opportunity for women
in our church to reach out and invite a friend, neighbor, coworker or relative who may not have a church
home to an evening of fun, encouragement and friendship. Each Girls Night Out features an inspirational
speaker who will clearly share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
English as A Second Language
ESL stands for English as A Second Language and is a vital part of our Missions Ministry.
Volunteers do not need to speak another language besides English. The goal is to improve conversational English skills, so even teachers who can speak another language must teach their classes in English.
Students in the Hunter Street ESL classes are not primarily Hispanic. We have students from Japan, Korea, Vietnam, India, Yemen and many other places, so it isn’t necessary that volunteers speak Spanish.
Thousands of internationals make their homes in Birmingham. If you meet them a store or restaurant, invite them to an ESL class. Classes are offered on Wednesday morning and evening and Sunday morning.
The Foundry
Foundry Friends is a ministry of The Foundry, a Bible-based recovery and rehabilitation center in
Bessemer. Volunteers with Foundry Friends mentor and encourage women one-on-one weekly, assist with
special events, lead Bible study short or long-term, and serve as a host for residents to attend
Hunter Street womens’ events.
Foundry Friends are involved in mentoring weekly or bi-weekly for one year with one resident, Bible study 6-12 weeks or long-term, or help as needed during special events only.
Jessie’s Place
Jessie’s Place is a downtown mission for moms who must leave their home environment because of abuse
or other situations. This ministry provides a meal and Bible study monthly for these moms, as well as
leading children’s activities during the Bible study time. Volunteers are willing to participate in
regularly scheduled Bible study time at Jessie’s Place.
