Theological Reading Groups (TRGs)

"Theology ...the study of God and of God's relation to the world." - Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Theological formation is important, because it affects every aspect of our lives. As Pastor Buddy Gray says, "the most important thing about you is your concept of God." Hunter Street believes our thoughts should be formed first and foremost by the truths we find in God's Word.

The Bible is God's revelation to man. In it we discover aspects of God's character, truths about his creation, our humanity and his plan of salvation. The study of God's Word leads us to greater humility and praise to God.

Hunter Street members have many opportunities to grow in theological understanding.

Theological Reading Groups (TRGs) are where Hunter Streeters get together in a small group setting to discuss a book on theology and God's Word. Click here to read the TRG guidelines.

There are four tracks of study offered. There is Systematic Theology, Biblical Theology, Church History and a NEW Living Grace Track.

Systematic Theology

  • Systematic Theology is the study of God and His relationship to the world. It answers the question “What does the whole Bible teach us today?” about any given topic. It’s a methodical, ordered approach to understanding and comprehending who God is and how He reveals Himself to us through the Bible.

The text for Systematic Theology is Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

Biblical Theology

  • Biblical Theology is the quest for the Big Picture of scripture. It is the overview of biblical revelation. It reveals that the Bible has a story line and this Big Picture must affect the way we approach individual biblical texts. The Bible contains many timeless principles and in Biblical theology these principles are interpreted in a historical context in light of the Big Picture of scripture. If we allow the Bible to tell its own story, we find a coherent and meaningful whole.

The two texts we use for Biblical Theology are Mark Dever’s Promises Made: The Message of the Old Testament and Promises Kept: The Message of the New Testament.

Church History

  • The study of Church History gives insight into understanding how the Christian message was grafted into human history since the days of the Apostles. The Good News Christians have proclaimed through the ages is that in Jesus Christ, and for our salvation, God has entered human history in a unique way. History is crucial for understanding not only the life of Jesus, but also the entire Biblical message. The Bible tells the story of God’s revelation in the life and history of the people of God. Without that story, it is impossible to know that revelation.

The texts we will use are Bruce Shelley’s Church History in Plain Language, Stephen Nichols The Reformation and Pages from Church History

Living Grace Track

  • In conjunction with the church-wide emphasis on Grace: God’s Unmerited Favor the books in this track will explore how the grace of God is expressed in the home, the church and in society. Through practical issues such as marriage, parenting, serving, giving and even politics you will discover that God’s grace shapes the way you respond to your personal struggles, your relationships, and all of life.

The first text we will use is Wayne Grudem’s Politics According to the Bible. Additional books will be recommended at a later date.
