Hunter Street’s History

God is Faithful…Yes He Is!
In January, 2007 the family of Hunter Street celebrated 100 years of serving God.

The Move To Hoover
Hunter Street celebrated 20 years of ministry in Hoover in September 2007. The move from Fourth Court West, where our church had it’s beginning, was not an easy decision.

In 1987 the 220 Hunter Street members sought God’s direction for their church, then located at Fourth Court West. At that time the average age of the members was 69 years and 7 months. There were no children, no youth. Pastor Buddy Gray had been the pastor for one year. The church was faced with three options: close the doors, move or sell.

Members voted to sell the church facilities on Fourth Court to another church, Sardis Baptist. These faithful members trusted God with their future and believed it was God’s plan for their church to move across the city to 11 acres of land on Highway 150 in Hoover.

Forward In Faith
On September 13, 1987, the last service was held at the building located on Fourth Court West. The homecoming theme “Moving Forward in Faith” expressed the members’ commitment to relocate to this rapidly growing.

While waiting for the first building to be built, the church met on Sundays and Thursdays at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hoover.

With much excitement, Hunter Street dedicated its new Worship Center (now the Chapel) on Easter Sunday, March 26, 1989. Three hundred people attended. The facilities included a Worship Center and education space to accommodate 600 people. (see photos link)

Since its rebirth in Hoover more than twenty years ago, Hunter Street has grown to more than 6,300 members on a 45-acre Hoover campus. Eight building projects have seen our church add a new worship center, parking, Recreation Outreach Center, children’s building, a student building, Legacy Park recreation complex in Bessemer and renovations to the campus.

Remembering Who We Are
More than buildings and programs, Hunter Street Baptist is known as a place where people can find acceptance and where loving God and loving others is more than a theme. Our church exists to lead people to Jesus Christ, to help them grow in Christ-likeness, to equip them to serve, to send them on mission to share the love of Christ and in all these things to magnify and worship the one true and living LORD.

Our Message To The Future
In September 2007 Hunter Street members dedicated a great message of God’s love to our future generations in the form of the 2057 Time Capsule, located across from The BookStore. The dedication plaque reads:

One generation shall commend your works
to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4

Through this time capsule we dedicate for future generations, part of the history that was preserved for us, and our own history. We do this in loving memory of those who have gone before us; and in loving anticipation of those who will come after us as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dedicated September 23, 2007
To be opened in 2057
Soli Deo Gloria
